Macromedia Contribute versions 2 and 3:

Error Message:

You can't edit this page now because xxxx is currently editing it. Please contact xxxx@xxx.xx for assistance.

Reason

There are 2 possible reasons for this issue:

• Firstly, Contribute uses a mechanism to know whether the page is being used by a user or not. MacroMedia call this the Check In/Check Out feature. To make this feature work, Contribute uploads a little file (called a LCK - lock -file) to the server when a user edits a page. If another user attempts to edit that page, they will get the above message. The said file would be removed once the user editing the page publishes or cancels the draft. Of course, what usually happens to cause this is that someone has been using Contribute and has a major crash and had to reinstall Contribute, which has the unfortunate impact of removing all the old drafts.

•  If you have verified that no one else is editing the page, another possible cause of this message is when the Lock file (LCK) associated with the page is left in the server. This commonly occurs when Contribute crashes while a user is editing a page.

Solution

If someone is editing the page, make sure that they publish it or cancel the draft.

After verifying that no one else is editing the page, the last resort is to remove the lock file from the server. Since Contribute does not have the ability to see the lock files, you may have to use another application to connect to your server and remove it.

Using Dreamweaver to check out and remove the lock file

Open the site files and go to Remote View.

Select the file that users cannot edit in Contribute.

Choose Check Out and if you are prompted to overwrite the check out, select “yes”.

Choose Check In to remove the lock file.

Using other applications to manually remove the Lock file from the server

If you are connecting through FTP, connect to your server with an FTP client. Several FTP clients are available for free or as shareware. FTP Commander is a piece of free software available from Download.com, here

Logon to the FTP server and locate and delete the lock file.
